Benefits of TM

Greater happiness – more energy or feeling better rested – better mental clarity – better management of stress and/ or stressful situations – better sleep…

It is almost impossible to easily encapsulate the benefits of TM in one sentence due to many different peoples different improved outcomes of Life through the learning and use of TM.

However what I would say is that, in general terms, I have either directly heard or read many, many accounts of people experiencing significantly better general well-being & function at home and in work – and also significantly better sleep which in turn improves daily life even more.

And that this conforms exactly with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s avowed goal to bring a better quality of Life to human life through this meditation technique. In short, TM works.

For more technical or scientific information please look at the information below;

Many peer-reviewed research studies on the TM technique have been published in over 150 scientific journals – albeit it some with small study & control groups. Some by fellow TM users and some by completely independent researchers (see David Orme-Johnson website   ). These studies have been conducted at many US and international universities and research centres, including Harvard Medical School, Stanford Medical School, Yale Medical School, and UCLA Medical School.*

This research has been published in such prestigious scientific journals as Science, Scientific American, the British Journal of Educational Psychology, the Journal of Mind and Behaviour & the American Journal of Physiology and many others beyond this.

(*This information is easy enough to verify on the internet through Google searches).

These scientific studies have shown that TM or transcendental meditation can or does help people suffering many different conditions including but not exclusive too;

  • Managing stress, anxiety and depression.
  • Reduced alcohol and drug abuse.
  • Higher level of brain functioning including alertness, intelligence, memory and creativity.
  • Improved heart health even with conditions like congestive heart failure.
  • Reducing severity of and the risk of atherosclerosis and strokes.
  • Normalise blood pressure
  • Decreased free radicals and increased longevity.
  • Often improved job performance and home relationships.
  • Improved academic school outcomes and school behaviour.
  • Managing and improving insomnia.

This is explained by the reality that the objective and subjective experience of the Transcendental Meditation technique is one of restful alertness (see “Science of TM & Ayur Veda” section of website; about the research of Robert Keith Wallace at UCLA – Department of Physiology). The mental relaxation brings about relaxation of the body; that is, when the mind settles down, the body gains deep rest.

What do doctors have to say about TM?

There are many noted doctors from prestigious US medical establishments such as the New York University School of Medicine, the John Hopkins Hospital and the Harvard Medical School Faculty who 100% endorse TM as a simple but profound holistic technique to improve the condition of mind and body.

There have been hundreds of doctors, in the past, in the United Kingdom who have learnt the TM technique according to a Sunday Times article written in 1988 by John Harding. Describing what drew him to learn the TM technique was the following;

“Professionally I treated such statistics with caution, but I was impressed by the fact that some 600 British GP’s who practice TM had written to the government urging that it be made available on the NHS. One doctor told me how she had prescribed TM for her patients over several years and had found it efficacious for a range of persistent problems. But what most impressed me were the interviews I conducted with a number of meditators, who had in common an enviable exuberance. They cited benefits including the ability to handle stress, feelings of calm, relaxation and general well-being, resistance to colds and flu, and the ability to think more clearly, to get down to things and accomplish more.”
